The Curly Lipstick Plant, also known as Aeschynanthus radicans, is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its vibrant, tubular flowers and glossy, curled green leaves. The plant gets its name from the lipstick-like blooms, which are deep red or orange, resembling lipstick tubes, and can be particularly dramatic when they bloom. This trailing plant is perfect for hanging baskets or as a decorative piece on shelves, bringing a pop of color and a touch of elegance to any space.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate leaves. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth and flowering may be reduced.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
  • Humidity: Thrives in higher humidity. Mist the leaves regularly or place near a humidifier to encourage healthy growth. It can tolerate average indoor humidity but does best with added moisture.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. A mix formulated for orchids or a combination of peat, perlite, and pine bark works well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 60–85°F (16–29°C). Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Pruning: Prune back any leggy growth after flowering to encourage a bushier, more compact plant. Deadhead spent flowers to promote new blooms.
