There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescence. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants.

YES, I am pet friendly!

Light

  • Optimal: Bright, indirect light.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight (can scorch leaves), low light (can cause slow growth).

Watering

  • Frequency: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Method: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry.
  • Note: Use room-temperature, distilled, or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup.

Humidity

  • Preferred Level: High humidity (60-70%).
  • Tips: Use a humidifier, mist the leaves regularly, or place the plant on a humidity tray.

Temperature

  • Ideal Range: 65-75°F (18-24°C).
  • Avoid: Drafts, sudden temperature changes, and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).

Soil

  • Type: Well-draining, peat-based potting mix.
  • Mix Recommendation: Combine regular potting soil with perlite and orchid bark for improved drainage.

Fertilization

  • Frequency: Every 4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Type: Balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
  • Pause: No fertilization needed in fall and winter.

Pruning

  • When: As needed.
  • How: Remove any yellow, damaged, or dead leaves to encourage new growth.

Repotting

  • Frequency: Every 1-2 years, or when roots outgrow the pot.
  • Best Time: Early spring, before the active growing season.

Common Problems

  • Yellow Leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Crispy Leaf Edges: Low humidity or underwatering.
  • Pests: Check for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs; treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Tips for Success

  • Maintain consistent moisture and humidity.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and cold drafts.
  • Monitor for pests regularly and act quickly if detected.

Enjoy your beautiful Calathea Vittata!
